Revolutionizing Agriculture: Drone Technology for Fertilizer Application in Transmara

Angata Sugar Mills16 August 2024

Angata Sugar Mills is pioneering the use of drone technology for precision fertilizer application across our 20,000-acre sugarcane fields in Transmara Sub County, Kenya.

This innovative approach allows us to apply fertilizers with pinpoint accuracy, reducing waste by 30% while improving crop yields by up to 25%. The drones are equipped with multi-spectral sensors that can detect nutrient deficiencies in the crop before they become visible to the naked eye.

Our team of certified drone operators works closely with our agricultural scientists to map each field and create customized fertilizer application plans. The drones can cover up to 200 acres per day — a task that would take a team of workers several weeks to complete manually.

The technology also reduces the environmental impact of our farming operations. By applying exactly the right amount of fertilizer in exactly the right places, we minimize runoff into waterways and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from excess fertilizer decomposition.

We are committed to sharing this technology with our outgrower farmers, and we have already trained 50 farmer champions who are learning to operate the drones on their own plots. This is just one example of how Angata Sugar Mills is using innovation to transform agriculture in Transmara.
